Established in 2019, the Foundwork Artist Prize is an annual juried award that recognizes outstanding practices by contemporary artists working in any media. We are thrilled to announce that this year, for the first time, two honorees will receive unrestricted $10,000 grants and studio visits with our distinguished international jury to cultivate community and discourse around their work. In addition, both the honorees and three shortlisted artists will participate in long-form interviews, as part of Foundwork’s Dialogues program, to further public engagement with their practices.

As a platform, Foundwork’s goal is to enable artists to introduce their work to people across the global contemporary art community, and to support access and discourse between artists, curators, gallerists, and collaborators, wherever they are based. Through an intentional combination of financial support and community building, the Foundwork Artist Prize furthers our broader purpose to be a professional resource for practicing artists, curators, and other collaborators.

Our 2021 jury is made up of six curators, gallerists, educators, and artists currently based in London, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, São Paulo, and Hong Kong/Shenzhen, all of whom are dedicated to working with and for artists in their respective practices. This esteemed group comprises Vanessa Carlos (Founder, Carlos/Ishikawa Gallery, London; Founder, CONDO international gallery collaborative); Qu Chang (Independent Curator and Art Historian, former Curator, Para Site, Hong Kong); Bridget Donahue (Owner and Director, Bridget Donahue Gallery, New York); Cédric Fauq (Curator, Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Incoming Chief Curator, CAPC Musée, Bordeaux); Thomas Lawson (Artist; Dean, School of Art, CalArts, Valencia; Editor-in-Chief, East of Borneo); and Thiago de Paula Souza (Independent Curator, São Paulo; Co-Curator, 2021 Frestas Triennial of Arts, Sorocaba, São Paulo; curatorial team, 10th Berlin Biennale). We are honored to be able to bring together their dynamic experiences, perspectives,  and mentorship for this year’s award.
