Bitchgoddesses is an installation depicting erased histories: those that have been wiped from the cultural canon, such as the history of queer people or women. The titular bitchgoddesses are women at the height of their power, demonized for possessing agency and control. They are answers to the world’s afflictions: what they were accused of becomes their strength, which they draw from anger. Two (default) bitchgoddesses hold a boulder on which is inscribed the story of the first of them, blamed for the rape that was committed against her.
Part of the installation is the interactive annex Hey, love, in which the viewer can connect with contemporary bitchgoddesses through the gesture of grasping the cables emerging from the boulder. The cables symbolize history powering the present, yet being severed, they allude to the erasure of collective memory. Only the viewer’s touch restores the connection.
The work is addressed to people with non-male experience and offers space to express the anger that oppressed groups are often unable to show, as they are expected to remain restrained despite the constant violation of their boundaries.
