Breaking News Tabby Slayer

Natalya Serkova for “Enter the Heat” by Inside Job

The essay was written in January 2020

An oak leaf slowly falls on the sidewalk. August, end of the day. The sun goes down and everything becomes filled with warm, yellow light. You can hear the subway going somewhere nearby. It’s unusually quiet outside. A thrush flies up and lands on an oak branch. The bird sits and looks around for a while, then flies away. Red and orange mixes with yellow light. The glasses in the windows gleams with colors. The sky is clear and very light, it turns red to the horizon and is still blue above. From the direction of the end of the street, it smells like the sea.

— Have you heard the latest news about the epidemic?

— Yeah, but do you really believe in all this?

— Why wouldn’t I believe it?

— I’ve already told you, I think it’s all done on purpose to make everyone panic, so we can start suspecting each other, stop going out, stop buying stuff.

— But who benefits from us behaving like this?

— I don’t know, the authorities, the government.

— Are you kidding me? They can’t benefit from you buying less.

— Well, isn’t this epidemic story leading to the fact that people started to leave home less without an emergency? A lot of people think it’s because of the riots in December. People are afraid to get together, to be outside for a long time—for the authorities, it might be a good thing.

— You have too much faith in these conspiracy stories. Every day, they report new data—how many people were infected, how many died, they show the bodies.

— The bodies aren’t shown actually. They just tell us that in another country all the bodies have been burned, then they show some kind of action from the hospital, then the crematorium, that’s all. And all these numbers—how do you check it? They can just be invented.

— You’re so naive, we’ll all be infected soon if all goes on like this.

— Look, come on. I find the whole virus thing very dubious. Have you seen pictures of this frozen tiger? It’s more like an old plush toy that too many kids have played with. And anyway, you know, even if that’s the case (which I highly doubt), there’s always someone who’s immune to the virus, like in all movies about epidemics. It’ll be funny if that person is you. Imagine everybody dies and you’re alone. You walk around the town looking for zombies just to find someone to talk to.

— But zombies can’t talk.

— Well, those will.

— Look, let’s just write a letter to the Department of Health and ask if all this is true or not?

— Where are we gonna send it? To the address on their website?

— Yeah, come on, google the contacts.

Two cars ran into each other at the intersection. The truck hit a red light and a blue Toyota crashed into it. The Toyota driver had no chance to react or slow down: according to those who observed the collision, everything happened extremely quickly. There was a 35-year-old pregnant woman driving a Toyota and a 52-year-old man driving a truck. Both drivers were killed on the spot. According to the data we received today, the man went to the hospital with symptoms similar to those of the New Virus. We recall that scientists have not yet had time to name the virus, so it has to be called the New Virus. The woman was eight months pregnant, the baby didn’t survive. Six months ago, she took out a mortgage and bought a two-bedroom apartment. Eyewitnesses said her loose hair were shining beautifully as she flew through the windshield. We do not know how everyone managed to see her hair in such a short period of time, but still. The woman’s mother told us today that her daughter was very afraid for her life and that of her child due to the recent increase in the number of cases of the virus. Yes, that’s how it is, you’re afraid of one thing and you’re dying of another. We did not make that point to the mother of the deceased so as not to upset her any further.

— As you may have already guessed, our conversation today will be somehow connected with the epidemic, as this is now perhaps more worrisome for everyone (and for quite obvious reasons) than the war in the Middle East or the presidential election. First of all, do you think that everything that is said about the virus is true?

— To be honest, I am more interested in the question this virus origin. They say that it was found in the carcass of a tiger that froze in the ice about 50,000 years ago and was discovered by scientists about 3 months ago. The virus infected one of the laboratory workers and thus he or she, I’m not sure, became patient zero, managed to infect 15 people and then it went on and on. So far, no vaccine against the virus has been developed, it has already infected citizens from 90 countries, the total number of infected is about two million people and this figure is constantly growing. Am I right in retelling this information? Oh, yes, the most important thing is that the virus is deadly, something about 300 thousand people died so far.

— Yeah, that’s right.

— Okay. I also remember when they said that this tiger wasn’t found by accident. It was found in an ice cave by a group of speleologists who had been working in the area for a long time and studied these caves. But they found it not because they had dug deeper than usual, but because the tiger was suddenly found on the very surface of ice, where speleologists had previously visited and found nothing there. So, the ice over the tiger melted and it appeared on the surface. We are explained that this is due to climate change and ice melting, and everyone are frightened that this tiger with this virus is just the beginning. But you know what worries me the most about this story? That it’s all too much like the script of some science fiction movie about the end of the world. When life starts to look too much like a fiction movie, I start to think that behind all this lies a well-written (or not so well-written) script, you know.

— In other words, are you implying the whole tiger story was invented by someone in advance and then implemented?

— Maybe it was, yes. Or maybe it wasn’t. In such situations, you can’t say anything for sure. Moreover, I assume that we will not find a single person in any government or single scientist of any country who knows the whole truth about this situation. Let me ask you a personal question: Has any of your relatives or friends been infected with the virus?

— No, fortunately not.

— Neither mine. But it also contributes to my mistrust. I do not mean that I would like to see someone I personally know infected with a deadly virus, God, of course not, but because of that the whole story so far resembles a story about supernatural powers. You know, when something strange and inexplicable happens to your friends who tell you about it, or to friends of friends, or to people you don’t know at all, but it never happens to you personally. I haven’t seen ghosts, things never moved around at my house for no reason, but that also doesn’t prove that there are no ghosts or poltergeists. Same goes for this virus: I have no positive proof that this is fiction, but I also cannot be sure otherwise.

— But if we imagine that this is somebody’s conspiracy or just a bad prank (which, however, has already turned massive), then why make it so difficult for yourself to compose such gigantic numbers of infected people and the global scope of the epidemic?

— I would like to stress once again that I am not in favour of an unambiguous view that this whole story is made up. Like the vast majority of people, I simply do not have enough data. But if I did try to answer your question, I would probably say that, oddly enough, the bigger the scale of the event, the easier it becomes to control. It is easy to refute information about an epidemic in a particular city, for example, just by going there, but it becomes almost impossible to refute information about an epidemic that has spread to 90 countries. The only difficulty can be found in consolidating the sources of information about the situation in different parts of the world, but when a team of professionals is gathered for this, everything else is already starting to work for you, not against you.

— The last question will be a bit lyrical. What would you compare the New Virus to?

— Um, I would say this: with a beautiful big flower that slowly blossoms right in front of your eyes and exudes the perfume you used in high school.

— Thank you!

An Internet female user hiding under the nickname blueflowerpower has become known by writing unusual blog posts related to the New Virus. She calls attention to the signs and symbols accompanying the virus story, and generally sees the New Virus as a mysterious sign of some significant global change, rather than as another epidemic that humanity is about to overcome. That’s what she writes about the deadly discovery in an ice cave:

‘I noticed that for some reason no one paid attention to the tiger’s pose and its position in the ice. Its body was located strictly on the West-East axis, while its head pointed to the East. By that the tiger foretells us a new dawn, a new day’s rise and a new future. Its paws were twisted under the chest, and he seemed to have frozen to death while sleeping soundly. That means he was calm and turned into self. It’s not a destructive state, but a state of peace and tranquillity. It’s tail curls up and forms number 9, in the outline of which, as we know, there is a circle—a symbol of harmony and infinity. The fact that the virus came to us through a tiger can also tell us a lot. Cats are freedom-loving, clean animals that can move not only horizontally but vertically as well—climbing trees and steep slopes. This indicates that this virus is to connect the states and nations not only ‘horizontally’ but that it is also able to bring us ‘vertical’, spiritual purification, to lift us to such peaks of spirit, where otherwise, if the virus had not invaded our lives, we simply could not reach. Although it may, on the contrary, push us down to the very bottom, where mankind never dwelled.’

And here is what blueflowerpower writes about the New Virus itself:
‘Have you ever wondered why this virus is called the New Virus? All previous viruses had much more prosaic, technical, let’s say, names: Ebola, swine flu, avian flu, coronavirus, HIV… Such names they received either by the name of the area where they were found, or depending on the way they acted, or according to what was similar in form to the structure of the virus carrier cell. But we don’t see any of those characteristics in the name New. What does that indicate? We are told that scientists simply still can’t determine exact structure and cellular composition of the virus—do you really believe that? Then why wasn’t it, for example, named after the caves where the tiger was found? Or something else that would indicate some of its characteristics. I’ll tell you why. Because its main characteristic is to be New. Something completely new to us, you understand? Like the coming of Christ or Buddha or the detonation of an atomic bomb. Maybe this virus is our new Christ. Think about it.’

Finally, another curious observation, this time she comments on the comparison of the New Virus with plague epidemics in the Middle Ages:
‘Recently, I’ve often seen the New Virus compared to medieval plague epidemics. But you know, I see a big difference here. The medieval plague was very, let’s say, material. Plague is all about shut-down contaminated cities, abandoned and burnt corpses, stench in the streets, getting drunk in a company of rats, and Decameron. And what comes with the New Virus? We read about it on the Internet, we look at the pictures and videos in the news, we often do not know the names of cities where it rages. Instead of mountains of corpses, we are shown white, smooth crematorium walls pointing to the sky. Symptoms of the disease are constantly changing and manifested in different ways, which makes almost impossible to track the spread of the virus. The new virus is an ether, a spirit, an energy hovering everywhere and visible nowhere.’

Thirteen film studios around the world have decided to join forces to implement the most comprehensive film project to date. The press service of an organized group of representatives of these film studios reports that their staff and founders have decided to make a feature film about the New Virus. At the same time, the film will include parts of the documentary production to be filmed in countries facing the epidemic. It is already reported that the film will be shown in more than 170 countries and will last more than 30 hours. However, the film will be screened in cinemas without any stops or splits. Representatives of the press department say that watching such an unusually long film will allow viewers to fully immerse themselves in what is happening and feel the terrible situation with the epidemic as much as the residents of the areas most affected by the epidemic have already felt. The press service also stresses that 50% of the proceeds of the film will be donated to foundations that help eradicate the epidemic.

A contemporary artist, whose name still remains a secret, has made a name for himself all over the world by doing work dedicated to the New Virus. For fourteen days, he was broadcasting live from an obscure gallery space in which a man infected with the virus resided during all those days. During that time, this man, namely a middle-aged man of unknown nationality, did not leave the gallery space, while his health gradually deteriorated. Apparently, the man was not given any medical care, while his recognizable symptoms of the virus were broadcast on camera. On the fourteenth day, after suffering agony, the man died right in front of the camera. Shortly afterwards, the broadcast ended and an inscription appeared on the screen, apparently addressed to all viewers of this horrifying performance on behalf of an unknown artist. It read: ‘The New Virus is the last art project of this world. The best one.’

At once in three different animal parks, located in different parts of the world, pandas delivered their offspring. As you may know, pandas are very reluctant to breed in captivity, so the news became a great joy not only for zoo workers, but also for all people who care about these vegetarian bears. All cubs are absolutely healthy and are now under the attentive care of zoologists.

The prehistoric tiger, in which the New Virus was found and which has already been nicknamed Tabby Slayer, is being investigated as we speak. The already existing research on the tiger has recently been updated with new information. For example, it has been revealed that the tiger was apparently suffering from a large calcium and magnesium deficiency in its body. Whether this was a consequence of the tiger’s living conditions and whether this could shed some light on the features of the New Virus is still being investigated by scientists.

— So, what, you didn’t get a reply?

— Man, do you really believe the Department of Health is gonna send us some kind of answer?

— Well, why not? They know more than we do.

— They know more than we do, but about folks like ourselves here, they don’t give a shit. They’d rather die from the virus than share some truthful information about it.

— Wow, I see you’re not as skeptical as you were a week ago.

— Yeah… I just think why would someone make all this up and just imagine the effort it takes… maybe it’s not as bad as they’re describing, but something shady is definitely going on.

— Something? You mean the epidemic?

— I mean… I mean something. Something.

The oak leaves have almost completely covered the sidewalk. Now the street seems golden and vibrant—the leaves get stirred by the running wind. This evening reminds us of the rest of dawns of this month. The calm, cloudless sky is covered with red and orange hues in the West, while in the East we can observe shades of purple, blue and green. The streets are quiet and birds are singing less and less, as the first cold is expected to hit very soon. From the direction of the end of the street, it smells like the sea.

Enter the Heat by Inside Job
(Ula Lucińska, Michał Knychaus)

With contributions by Maya Hottarek, Natalya Serkova, Kuba Bąk, Ula Lucińska & Michał Knychaus (ed.)

“Touristic, mythological, spiritual, heroic and artistic journeys into the depths of the underworld constantly serve to reinforce the connection between life and death. Blades cut out of metal, devoid of a hilt, strange weapons that hurt both perpetrator and victim, were sent into the guts of Earth. This telluric journey could be a tale of an escape from the eternally insatiable demon of the art world”. – Kuba Bąk

This publication appears on the occasion of the Residency Gurzelen in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland (November 2018 – March 2019). Inside Job (Ula Lucińska, Michał Knychaus) alongside Maya Hottarek descended to one of the ice caves in Jura Mountains to make the photo documentation of their works. The physical structure of the cave has changed over recent years due to global warming. Earlier, throughout the year, one could observe phenomenal ice stalagmites and stalactites, which are now difficult to see even during winter. By using subtle interventions, they treated this changing, melting environment not only as a backdrop for their sculptures — but as a central figure in the whole narrative.
