Little bunnies race to get to the tempting treats. Suspense increases as players avoid the dangers along the path– one wrong step might open a hole, causing any bunny on that spot to fall out of the board.
Bunny Trap is Marjaana Rantala’s latest body of work, consisting of four spatially ensembled sculptures. Entangling together through varying levels the pieces create a game-like world. Shaped with diverse material-specific techniques, the works combine delicate components such as glass and bulbous plants alongside industrial concrete and steel. The work draws from trains of thoughts sparked by various games, cyclical notions of time, architectural landscapes and urban nature as well as time spent on hiking trails.
Rantala’s practice unfolds through a handicraft-driven process guided by associations that emerge from prolonged observation and close engagement with materials. She constructs sculptural forms from elements drawn from everyday life, combining and distorting them until they operate on the verge of being unrecognizable. The tension experienced in the presence of her works arises from the incompatibility of these familiar elements. As playful notions take shape into sensitive political gestures, these sculpted worlds serve as tools for imagining alternative ways of being.
