Cosmic poetics

Anna Bochkova

At Einstellungsraum, Hamburg, Germany

March, 04 — March 26, 2021

‘Cosmic Poetics’ presents to us a personal perspective on the philosophical and artistic movement of Russian Cosmism.

Anna Bochkova deals gently with the complex theories behind this movement, questions these concepts and puts forward a discourse based on her autobiography, combing it with narratives of the former East, such as the soviet space program and its infrastructure, socialism, propaganda, the legendary figure of Yuri Gagarin, and Western sputnik shock.

The sculptures make allusions to space ships, space suits, helmets, space stations and satellites. With their lightweight fragility and their skin-like textures, they seem to escape the laws of gravity. They create not only a private archive, in which the artist deals with the subjects of memory, solidarity, reality, collective fantasies and dreams but they also open a space for critical reflection and questioning of existing hierarchies.

Einstellungsraum e.v. is an artist led space, which was founded in Hamburg 20 years ago in a former flower shop. The space searches for connecting aspects between art and road traffic, informing the interested public about contemporary art and culture, automobility and their phenomenons. Every year the space focuses on one theme and aims to create a clear statement towards it. ‘Cosmic poetics’ refers to ‘Seelenklima’ or soul climate, the chosen theme of 2021.
