“dreams of rain inside” feature a group of new paintings and one sculptural piece, all made in 2021.

Philip Hinge’s work reveals unexpected and strange moments in the setting of his everyday life. Mundane apartment interiors, widows, curtains, couches are the backdrop for his hallucinatory dramas; the spaces are depicted with the simplicity of stage sets.
His protagonists are often pets (frequently cats), who shape shift and melt with a twisted exuberance. The characters seem to be aware of our viewing them, their bizarre actions performed momentarily for our enjoyment. Things happen at different speeds, often with a heightened feeling of movement and time.

Hinge exploits the imaginary realm of painting, finding excitement and charge in the otherwise banal. His work merges a comic book aesthetic sensibility with 19th century French interiors and 20th century Surrealism. He cleverly entangles a particular beauty with grotesque and B-movie weirdness.

Philip Hinge (b. 1988) holds an MFA in painting from the Virginia University. Hinge’s work has been exhibited at a variety of venues, including, Stepsister, (NY, NY), Freddy (Harris, NY), Final Hot Desert (Utah), Ungefaehr 5 (Cologne, DE), mcg21xoxo (Chiba, Japan), Felix Art Fair, Plague Space (Krasnador, RU), Context, Art Miami (Miami, FL), Marvin Gardens (Ridgewood, NY), Brennan & Griffin (NY, NY), & Peter Blum Gallery (NY, NY). In addition to his studio work, Hinge also runs and curates two separate project spaces, Catbox Contemporary (Ridgewood, NY) (2016- ) which is located in his cat’s cat-tree, and darkZone (NJ), which was located in his parent’s basement in NJ (2019-2021). Hinge lives and works in Ridgewood, Queens, NY.
