The title ‘Red Shoes’ is inspired by the famous quote ‘They can get you in East Hampton for wearing red shoes on a Thursday’ by Little Edie, the heroin of the 1975 documentary ‘ Grey Gardens .’ When ‘Little Edie’ made this statement, she was referring to the pressure to adhere to the puritanical code of a conservative town. Living in her dilapidated oasis, ‘STAUNCH’ Little Edie, in her ‘revolutionary costumes’ has become a ‘non conformist’ icon – especially in the bourgeoisie Hamptons where she and her mother spent so many years. East Hampton Tow envisions the space as Little Edie’s secret treasure trove filled with haunting memories and precious items. For ‘Red Shoes’, we strive to capture some of her spirit in our bright red shed on wheels, ‘in East Hampton, on a Thursday ‘ (on Newtown Lane, EH, August 13th, 6-8PM)
