Fundament is the first off-site show by the collective 1:4:9, created to explore the intersections between humanity and nature, the concept of time, and the inevitability of natural transformation. Set within a natural landscape, the works are not isolated, but integrated into the environment — evolving with the land, gradually dissolving into their surroundings.
The project began with the discovery of a discarded mattress at a former campsite — once a symbol of domestic comfort, now a relic of abandonment. It serves as a central motif, anchoring an exploration of fragility, impermanence, and the persistent tension between civilization and natural ecosystems, prompting a reflection on the traces of human presence within nonhuman systems, and the fragile persistence of anthropocentric structures when situated in contexts beyond their intended function.
The artworks in Fundament are not static objects but living processes — activated through their presence in the natural world. Performance and objects created from biodegradable materials function as agents of transformation and synergy, participating in ecological cycles, dissolving, mutating, and becoming entangled with the land — a quiet, persistent gesture toward renewal.
