Images Without Alibi, Tudor Necula, Pharmakon Gallery, 2026
In “Images Without Alibi”, Tudor Necula presents a group of paintings and sculptures that confront the viewer with images refusing to excuse themselves. Instead, they remain exposed without the shelter of irony, quotation, or explanation. Necula’s paintings operate at a point where the image can no longer rely on the protective strategies that have long mediated meaning. By stripping the image of its alibi, the exhibition proposes painting as a site of exposure rather than distance. Here, images do not explain themselves, nor do they disappear into context. They remain present, unsettled, and accountable, inviting the viewer to interpret not what images mean, but what it means to look at them in our present times.
