Antonio Hofmeister Ribeiro & Liudmila Savelyeva: “The Backrooms Network”, fi ve 3D-printed fl uorescent PLA sculptures with integrated electronic devices, 2025
Abandoned workplaces, glitching characters, and spectral traces set the stage for a world shaped by unfathomable algorithms, where code becomes ritual and the interface a spiritual altar.
The exhibition draws on the internet phenomenon of the “backrooms,” a post-digital horror aesthetic born on 4chan in 2019. These endless corridors and soulless rooms, lit by harsh fluorescence, embody digital disorientation, existential emptiness, and the urge to escape.
Through diverse media, the works make these structures visible, oscillating between irony and critique, digital excess and dystopia. As a post-digital concept in times of multiple crises, wars and disasters they appear as a contemporary expression of aimlessness and powerlessness. The speed with which content is produced, discussed and reacted to on various platforms influences our social life and thus artistic work. The Backrooms are a space for artistic responses and comments on these dynamic processes. Artistic positions that reflect on digital modes of production and explore the interactions between online and offline spaces are brought together. The exhibition venue, a vacant office building, reinforces the thematic tension between the digital present and physical transience.
