Gene Gallery is delighted to announce the solo exhibition “The Gale in the Armor” by artist Liao Xiaozhou, on view from November 5, 2025, to January 4, 2026. “The Gale in the Armor” marks Liao Xiaozhou’s organic transition from theater to contemporary art. He skillfully transmutes the theatricality of the stage into a material-based narrative of permanence—the static knights and warhorses are no longer mere sculptures, but performers in a state of continuous enactment, constructing a deferred theater of modernity within the gallery space.

His appropriation of the knight motif reveals a distinct critical consciousness. By deploying this Western symbol within a Chinese context, he establishes a subtle dual mirror: it interrogates cultural identity within globalization while exposing the disciplinary mechanisms of modernity on the subject. The “wind” encapsulated within the armor captures with precision a fundamental predicament of our era—how the life impulse remains both suppressed and perpetually trembling under the dual nature of rationality as both a shelter and a constraint.

As a practitioner who has also moved from theater into contemporary art, I am delighted to observe that Xiaozhou has developed a unique visual grammar.
Works such as “Weathervane” evoke the complex tensions of modern society through the dynamic interplay between inflatable forms and stainless steel. This capacity to transmute material properties into social metaphor is a particular sensitivity endowed by his theatrical background.

“The Gale in the Armor” serves not only as a diagnosis of an accelerating age, but also signals the emergence of a mature artist. Xiaozhou succeeds in transforming personal experience into a profound contemplation of the universal human condition, sustaining a Brechtian sense of alienation and critique through static installations. This creative trajectory, originating in theater, demonstrates significant methodological value by virtue of its acute engagement with contemporary issues.
